the movie begins in prehistory, showing us what we were before we became human. the obelisk, left by an advanced alien/god, starts the prehumans on a path to becoming humans. the first utilization of technology -- a bone used as a weapon -- is the moment of transition.
then you have human beings, although in the future, still the same as us. again an obelisk is discovered, planted on the moon by the same aliens. they've placed it there because when we are capable of discovering it, we will be ready for the next stage of our evolution. as prehumans came before humans, our current existence will be followed by a new form.
technology has come a long way since the opening sequence -- from a bone club all the way to spaceships, and ultimately, HAL. violence and power are forever tied to technology, its first use being to kill another ape. with all the advancements and peaceful uses of technology, it cannot escape its violent origins: HAL eventually becomes an aggressive, self-protecting killer.
we find the next breadcrumb orbiting a moon of jupiter. this is the moment we will transition from humans to whatever comes next. the crazy lightshow and trippy room/oldman shit is thick with meaning but ultimately boils down to what happens when a human is dragged into the next level of existence. he is confused, disoriented, etc.
the movie ends with the birth of the next stage of our existence: the first of a new kind of being, the ubermensch, waiting to be born, its nature and purpose left for us to guess. will its technology still be intrinsically tied to violence? will its new form be as departed from humans as we are from apes?
